The City of Annandale’s code enforcement program helps maintain safe, attractive neighborhoods by ensuring compliance with zoning and property maintenance standards. Well-maintained properties support property values and contribute to a strong sense of community.
The goal of code enforcement is to improve quality of life for Annandale residents through education and enforcement.
Complaint Based Enforcement
Code compliance is enforced on a complaint basis. Generally, the City receives a call from a neighbor about a property on their street saying there is a violation. The City will then review the property and verify whether or not a violation actually exists. In all cases with code enforcement, the City wants to work with the property owner to achieve compliance with regulations.
Annual Inspections
The City conducts annual inspections in the Spring. During these inspections, City staff will drive through and inspect properties from the city street. Properties found to be in violation will receive notices of violation.

Expected Resolution Time
Due to legal notice requirements, resolving a typical code enforcement violation may take two to three weeks. The City aims to ensure compliance while allowing property owners reasonable time to address concerns.
Code Enforcement Process
When a complaint is received, City staff conducts an inspection to determine if a violation exists. Documentation, including photos, may be taken to assess property conditions. If a violation is found, City staff will provide a notice of violation to the property owner.
Notice and Compliance
Property owners found to be in violation will receive a written notice detailing the code violations and a compliance deadline. The time given to correct the violation varies based on the issue. Common violations, such as overgrown grass or exterior storage, typically require correction within 7 days, while more complex repairs may be granted additional time at the City’s discretion.
A follow-up inspection is conducted after the compliance date. If the issue has been resolved, the case is closed. If the violation remains, the City may take further action. For certain violations, such as overgrown grass, garbage, or discarded furniture, the City may abate the violation and bill the property owner. In other cases, the Police may issue a citation.
